Death*He died of heart disease on 30 April 1875 at Leonia, Bergen County, New Jersey, at age 73, at the home of his son-in-law Stephen H. V. Moore, at which he had arrived the day before.3 
Notes*William was a well-known master builder in New York City. He also served as an alderman of the Eighth Ward in 1844-45 and 1854-57, and then as alderman of the Fifth Assembly District in 1858. His obituary records that For several years he was also President of the Knickerbocker Insurance Company, one of the School Commissioners in the Board of Education, and one of the Regents of the University of New-York. During the latter years of his life, though retired from active business, he was still identified as Director or Turstee with several prominent insurance, banking, and public institutions. William's son George, who wrote a history of the family, claimed that William never used his middle name or initial.17,3
