Birth*Charles W. Chitty was born between 1813 and 1822 in England.1,2,3,6,7,5,8,9
Immigration*He immigrated to the United States about 1839.5,9
Marriage*He married Bridget Magee before 1843. Charles W. Chitty married at least twice. The first wife of whom I'm aware is Bridget Magee, to whom he was shown married in the 1850 census. If she was the mother of some or all of his first few children, the marriage was probably prior to daughter Charlotte's birth about 1844.10,1
Birth of DaughterHis daughter Charlotte Chitty was born circa 1844 at New York.1,2
Naturalization*Charles was naturalized on 4 November 1844 at the Common Pleas Court, New York City, New York County, New York. The witness was Sarah Chitty, possibly a sister or a first wife (if wives were allowed to be witnesses).5,9,2
Residence*He lived on 4 November 1844 at the corner of 16th Street and 9th Avenue, New York City, New York County, New York.5,9
Birth of DaughterHis daughter Mary H. Chitty was born circa 1845 at New York.1
Birth of DaughterHis daughter Susan A. Chitty was born circa 1847 at New York.1
Birth of SonHis son Charles T. Chitty was born between 1848 and 1849 at New York.1,2,3
Census1850FedUS*Charles W. Chitty and Bridget Magee appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of New York City, New York County, New York, enumerated 16 July 1850. Their children Charlotte, Mary H., Susan A. and Charles T. were listed as living with them, as was an oysterman named Hugh Kernan, who was probably a boarder.1
Marriage*Charles married Malinda Doyle sometime after 1851.4,2,3
Birth of SonHis son William John Chitty was born in November 1854 at New York.2,3,6,7,11,8,12,13,14,4,10
NoteCharles may be the person listed as Charles W. Chitte, pedlar, shown with a home address at 218 Spring Street, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1857.15
Birth of DaughterHis daughter Isabella Chitty was born circa 1860 at New York.2,3
Census1860FedUS*He and Malinda Doyle appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of New York City, New York County, New York, enumerated 13 June 1860, and his family have not definitively been located in the 1860 U.S. census, but there is a strong possible listing for them in New York City under the name Chedick, enumerated as follows: Chas. W. Chedick, age 40, male, huckster, real estate $300, personal estate $100, born ENG; Belinda Chedick, age 34, female, born Canada; Catharine Chedick, age 17, female, born NY; Mary Chedick, age 15, female, born NY; Sarah Chedick, age 13, female, born NY; Charles Chedick, age 11, male, born NY, attended school within the year; Susan Chedick, age 8, male, born NY, attended school within the year; William Chedick, age 5, male, born NY, attended school within the year; Isabel, age 3/12, born NY; I. Benjamin, age 14, male, born NY. This would have been the same part of town where a Charles Chitte, pedlar, was shown living in 1857. Their children Charlotte, Mary H., Susan A., Charles T., William John and Isabella were listed as living with them.16
Birth of DaughterHis daughter Eliza Chitty was born circa 1862 at New York.2,3
Occupation1865, Charles W. Chitty was a saloon keeper at the foot of Christopher Street, New York City, New York County, New York.17
Birth of DaughterHis daughter Ida Chitty was born circa 1866 at New York.18
Note*He is probably the person listed as Charles W. Chitty, oysterman, shown with a home address at 147 Christopher Street, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1869.19
Occupation*He was a bartender on 8 July 1870.2
Census1870FedUS*He and Malinda Doyle appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of New York City, New York County, New York, enumerated 8 July 1870. Their children William John, Eliza, Charlotte, Charles T. and Isabella were listed as living with them, as was Mary (?) Doyle, who may have been Malinda's mother.2
OccupationHe was working in an eating saloon in January 1871.3
Census1870FedUS#2*He and Malinda Doyle appeared on the second enumeration of the 1870 Federal Census of New York City, New York County, New York,at the southwest corner of West and Barrow Streets, enumerated January 1871. Their children Eliza, Charles T., Isabella and William John were listed as living with them, as was Mary (?) Doyle, who was probably Malinda's mother.3
Death*He died after January 1871.
NoteCharles' two known wives, Bridget and Malinda, are probably the mothers of most, if not all, of his children. I have presented them as seperate groups below, however, so that it is clear how much confusion there is. Even our direct ancestor, William John Chitty, made the issue less clear. On his wedding certificate he named Malinda as his mother. However, the informant on his death certificate named Bridget Magee as William's mother, which leads me to believe that William may have named Malinda because she was alive at the time of his wedding and it was proper form at that time to give a stepmother's name if the birth mother was dead.
