(with Parents) Census1901FedForeignHe appeared on the 1901 Federal Census of Moretonhampstead, Devon, England in the household of his parents, Samuel Shears Woodley and Elizabeth Ann Stanleick.4
Residence*Before his emigration to Canada, William lived in Devon, England, probably in Moretonhampstead.5
OccupationHe was a carpenter in 1906.5
Immigration*He immigrated in 1906 to Canada. His daughter Edith says he left Moretonhampstead about age 19 due to lack of available work, but he reported in the 1911 census that he emigrated in 1905. However, he mailed a postcard to Mary Steele from Moretonhampstead (Devon) in 1906, and there is an apparent sighting of him on the ship Athenia, arriving in Montreal on 30 Oct 1906 from Glascow (Scotland), and I think this is the better date. His destination was shown as Collingwood, Ontario. In May of 1909, when he returned from a trip home, he stated he had lived in Canada for 2½ years, which would also fit with Oct 1906. When he left for Canada, his mother made him promise that he wouldn't drink. After a while, he wrote and asked her to release him from this promise because it was difficult not to able to drink with the other men when socializing, and she did.13,14,15,5,16
OccupationHe was a carpenter on 5 March 1909.6
Psgr ListHe sailed aboard the Empress of Britain out of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, and docked on 5 March 1909 at Liverpool, Merseyside, England. Note that the Ancestry.com indexing for the database UK Incoming Passengers Lists, 1878-1960, gives the ship as the S. S. Munda from the Furness Allen stamship line, although the document page clearly states it was the Empress of Britain of the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) Atlantic Steamship Line.6
OccupationHe was a carpenter on 1 May 1909.16
Psgr List*He sailed aboard the Empress of Ireland out of Liverpool, England, and docked on 1 May 1909 at Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.16
Marriage*He married Mary Louisa Steele, daughter of Thomas Steele and Hannah Matilda Mineard, on 7 October 1910 at Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They had met in the Salvation Army in England before William emigrated (they later became disenchanted with it, and at the time of their marriage they considered themselves Anglican). On the day Mary was to arrive in Montreal from England, William went to meet the boat but was told by dock workers that it wouldn't be in for several hours, so he went off for a while. About an hour later the ship did arrive, and after everyone had been unloaded, Mary was left alone on the dock with her trunk. She decided that if William didn't show up within a certain amount of time she'd buy passage to Toronto and work in the hospital there. Luckily, William returned before she left, and he was mortified that this had all happened. They were married the same day in Montreal and took a hotel room for the night.17,18,11,19,20,21,7

The deceased, who was 78 years of age, with her daughter had for many years carried on a newsagent's buisness in Fore Street, and although not enjoying very good health the end came quite suddenly. It was only three months ago that she lost her daughter Annie. A short service was held in the Baptist Chapel by the Rev. W. G. Hodgson, and the large gathering bore testimony to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Much sympathy is felt for the two surviving daughters in their loss. The principal mourners were: The Misses Florence and Bessie Woodley (daughters), Messrs. Robert and William Stanleick (brothers), Messrs. H. and E. Stanleick (nephews), Mrs. Sharland, Mrs. Clay and Miss A. Stanleick (nieces). The bearers were Messrs. Lamacraft, Beer, Colwill, A. Wyatt, F. Wyatt, and A. Hole. The floral tributes were many and included those from Emmie and Fred; Ern and Loy; Beat and Nell (Bovey); Mrs. Hill and Emily; Mrs. Brimblecombe (Ford Street); Mrs. Underhill and family; Mrs. Gay; Mrs. Jeffrey and Eva; members and friends of the Baptist Chapel, etc., etc.47

Olive Mildred Lumley Woodley passed away peacefully in her home in Coldstream, Tuesday, June 16, 1998, surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She is survived by her daughters: Kathleen Woodley (Bill Heidrick); Tish Woodley; and Janet Woodley (John Rook); her grand-daughter, Olivia Woodley-Rook; and her sister, Betty McGregor. She was pre-deceased by her daughters' father, Bob Woodley.

Born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan on February 5, 1916, Olive and her family moved to Vernon in 1960, and over the next 25 years she worked unstintingly for the benefit of this communtiy as founding member (1975) and president (1977-83) of the Vernon Community Music School; as founding member (1969) and president (1971-75, 1979-83) of the Social Planning Council; as organizer of the "Showcase of the Arts" (1968-71), now known as Creative Chaos; as organizer and Chair of the Okanagan Conference on International Affairs (1963-71); as well as working actively for other social and cultural organizatyions, including the Community Concerts Association, the Chamber Music Society, the Okanagan Symphony Society, the Okanagan Mainline Regional Arts Council, the Women's Canadian Club and the University Women's Club. As chairman of the Vernon Housing Association (1971-80), Olive oversaw the construction of Wolsey House (now Sharon Court), Vernon's first low-rental apartment complex.

Olive's public spiritedness also took her into the political arena, as member of Coldstream's first Advisory Planning Commission (1967-69) as well as Coldstream alderman (1974-75); as member of the Okanagan Basin Water Study Public Participation Task Force (1969-73), and member of the Implementation Taks Force (1976-80); as well as her two appointments to the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission (1975-76, 1983-84).

Although in recent years her health kept her close to home, Olive took to 'surfing the net', connecting via cyberspace to discussion groups on her favorite subjects of politics and economics.

As Olive requested, there will be no funeral service (cremation); and in lieu of flowers, friends wishing to do so may make donations to the Vernon Food Bank, 3303-32 Avenue, Vernon V1T 2M7.
